Inspiring....
I just started reading this book a few days ago and it is INSPIRING to say the
least!
It's about autism, well more about what to do AFTER the diagnosis.
I thought, like
most, that all you could do was learn to deal with the behavior not treat the symptoms in a way that can REVERSE
some of the damage. I was wrong, there are ways to reverse the damage and this book tells the story of many many parents
who have.
I have always been concerned with the link between vaccinations, specifically the MMR shot, and
autism. I wondered....was it the number of shots given at the same time, or the age of the child, or maybe "one
size does not fit all" when it comes to vaccines?
Whatever the reason, it is clear that my son's generation
and my parents generation are miles apart in the number of autism cases. Autism is on the rise in record numbers, especially
in BOYS.
I first became aware of autism when my father was the Deputy Chief of Developmental Disabilities at the
CDC. I would often hear him talk about the many studies being conducted in that area. Twenty years later
and there is still no definitive cause. Although I believe they are on the right track with the link to vaccines.
After my son was born, my husband and I did research oversees before it came time for him to have the MMR vaccines.
We determined very quickly that the preservative Thimerosal was heavily linked to cases of autism.
So how do we
avoid it?
We decided to use 3 "single use" vaccines that did not contain preservatives. The
vaccines were spread 6mths apart so the body had an adequate amount of time to process the vaccines separately.
Tomorrow is my son's last MMR related vaccine...Rubella.
Although I am still nervous, I know that I've
done everything I can. The rest is in God's hands.
For those of you out there who have a son or daughter
with autism, I have so much respect for you. It is a painful journey that no one should have to endure.
I can only hope that the CDC starts listening to the MILLIONS of parents out there who have the knowledge and research to
prove the link between autism and vaccines.

The
perfect fall day...

Today was the day.
The temperature was not too hot,
not too cold and there was just enough breeze.
It was also the perfect day to find the perfect pumpkin....or
in my son's case the perfect 4 pumpkins!
We had lunch Al fresco at our favorite Mexican cafe and then
home for a good game of "kick the ball" on our porch.

It's
all about the boy
It's been a rough couple months as many of you know....but I think I see the light
at the end of the tunnel.
Divorce is a difficult thing, but if you have children, it takes on a whole new dimension.
In the end, it's really all about "what's best for the child".
I can still remember
the day my son was born (in Singapore) and how it changed my life forever. It's funny how some people associate
motherhood with the day your child is born, but for me, it started the year before.
I wished so hard for my son
long before he was even a glimmer. That wish is really the reason why I reconciled with my husband 4 years ago
and I have no regrets. The nine months of pregnancy seemed like forever, but when he arrived (via C-section) it was all
worth it. He was perfect and I was complete.
So as I enter into the last few months of settlement, I know
that my son's future is in my hands, and I have no plans to "settle" for anything less than "the moon".
He deserves it!
P.S. Thanks to everyone
who sent me supportive emails with great advice and really good resources on divorce. I am truly thankful for your generosity.
There are such great Mums out there in blog land!
